The Water Holds More Than You Think
I used to dream of living near water. It always symbolized freedom to me. Peace. Clarity.
Now that I live in the Bay Area, I’m surrounded by it. And I make it a habit to go to the water anytime my mood feels off. It’s a quick trip that resets everything.
Sitting by the waves isn’t just relaxing. It’s grounding. It reminds me that the world is bigger than my current problem. The rhythm of the water has a way of matching your breath. Before you know it, your heart rate slows and your mind feels lighter.
Your “water” might be a lake, a park fountain, or even a soundscape in your headphones. The key is finding your calm place and visiting it often.
You’re Helping More Than You Know
Shopping local didn’t always feel like a mental health tool to me. Until I realized how it made me feel.
One day, we were in a thrift store when a voice came over the speaker thanking us for supporting employees who faced barriers in other job markets. I looked to my left and saw a worker with half an arm, smiling and proud. In that moment, I knew we were in the right place.
The produce market gives me the same feeling. There’s something special about shaking the hand that grew your food. Or buying jalapeños and cilantro from someone who picked them that morning.
Supporting locals gives you a connection. A sense of purpose. It’s a small way to give back and it adds unexpected joy to your day.
The Right Start Changes Everything
The perfect time to wake up isn’t an actual number. It’s the time that gives you flow, not pressure.
You know the mornings where you have time to sit with breakfast instead of stuffing it into a commute. The ones where you sip orange juice out of a real glass instead of a to-go lid. The ones where the sun’s still rising and so are you.
When I give myself a head start on the day, I get more done without rushing. More joy. More patience with my family. More space to be.
It’s not about getting up early for the grind. It’s about getting up early for you.
Movement Is a Privilege
You don’t realize how much of a gift it is to move your body until it’s taken away.
Walking clears more than just your physical energy. It clears mental clutter too. You don’t have to walk far or fast. Just walk with intention.
Walk without your phone. Walk with no destination. Walk to release.
Some of my best ideas, most honest thoughts, and hardest cries happened on walks. Not in therapy. Not on the couch. Just walking, breathing, noticing.
Five Minutes to Reset Your Mind
Meditation doesn’t have to be long or complicated to be effective. Five minutes can be the perfect sweet spot.
A five-minute guided meditation is long enough to shift your energy and short enough to fit between meetings or before the kids wake up.
It doesn’t have to be deep. Just intentional.
Breathe in. Breathe out. Come back to your body. Come back to now.
That’s it. And it works.
Feed Your Brain Something Better
I’ll be real: doomscrolling never helped my mental health. But grabbing a self-growth book and reading even just one page? That does.
There’s something about learning, growing, being reminded that you can evolve. It brings peace. It brings hope.
You don’t need to finish a whole chapter. Just read until something clicks. And when it does, underline it. Let that line live with you all day.
Cook Like You Love Yourself
When my mental health is dipping, one of the best things I can do is make myself a meal I actually enjoy.
Not a quick snack. Not a rushed dinner. But a meal made with intention.
There’s something healing about cutting vegetables, seasoning food to taste, and sitting down with a warm plate. A full stomach can shift your mood. Especially when the food was made with love.
The Light Trick That Actually Works
Red light therapy wasn’t my idea. It was my wife’s.
At first, I didn’t get it. But the more I tried it, the more I noticed how my body felt during and after. Calmer. Warmer. Less tense.
It’s become one of those ten-minute pockets of stillness that I actually look forward to. The red glow in a quiet room gives my mind permission to stop racing.
