A wonderful read! What stood out the most for me was when you spoke on forgiving yourself! I have been wrestling here lately for not managing an inheritance the way I should. I walk around almost every day feeling horrible. However, after reading that line, it did something to me! I may never again have the finances that I once had, but I certainly do not have to walk around beating myself up over the situation. It is truly time to make peace and be thankful for what I have remaining and moving forward, practice stewarding well!!!!!! I thank you.
Yes to all of this! It comes down to facing money and our relationship with it. People are so connected to money as self-worth, the first thing I say to people I've coached or helped is that money is not who you are, and how much or how little you have doesn't say anything about you. Your work in talking about money openly is so important and helps a lot of people.
Thank you so much for this Deidre. You're right—facing money means facing so many layers of identity, fear, and past experiences. Reminding people that money isn't their worth is powerful. The more we talk about it openly, the more we free people from shame and help them make clearer, stronger choices. I appreciate your voice in this too.
The living in shame hit me hard. I have forever lived with shame that I can never fix my money situation. I'm in debt, have ALWAYS been in debt, no matter how much money I've made. I secretly squirm because people think I'm doing ok. But, I'm beginning to realize how can I know how to handle money when I was never taught? Ironically, I taught my son how to take care of his finances, by teaching HIM! It's a process, and I'm still learning. {at 68yo!) I am going to write that letter and forgive myself. Thank you so much!!
Patty, this hit me. There’s so much honesty and strength in what you shared. The part about teaching your son what you were never taught says everything. That’s generational growth. I’ll fight to say 68 is not too late. The fact that you’re willing to look at yourself with compassion instead of shame now is huge. I really hope you write that letter and let some of that weight go. You deserve that.
This hit differently - most people change their income, but never their mindset, and then wonder why nothing feels different. Money really starts behaving differently when your beliefs about it do.
The concept of 'spending for appearances' really hit home for me. Just as simple as asking the question “is it for me or for appearance?” Thank you for this i truly appreciate the insight.
Excellent. Absolutely excellent. Thank you.
Agreed!
Thank you so much. I appreciate your support Dianne.
1st one’s a banger. Stop chasing money. Become valuable and money will chase you.
